Vilanova i la Geltrú is the capital of Garraf region, situated halfway between the major metropolitan areas (40 km from Barcelona and 45 from Spain), with a total area of 33.5 km2 and a population of 61 427 inhabitants, according to the official census of 2005. It is a city with a long and dense history, which won the Town Charter of King James I in 1274.The city, polarizing a wider local environment has always been very dynamic economy, based first in agriculture and maritime trade in wine (XVIII and XIX), later in the industrialization of the textile sector (siglo XIX) and finally, in a large industrial diversification based on metal factories, textile and chemical (first half of the twentieth century). Currently, the city maintains some agricultural activity, a fishing fleet of the most important of Catalonia and be added to the industrial sector the rapid development of tertiary and service sector.
